Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Brett H — 09 Sep 2014
A flawless police drama which invites you along to weave through the conspiracies and see some of the most brilliant writing in a cop noir; ever! The cast is first-rate with the three leads being truly outstanding, and the supporting players being a who's-who of strong character actors.
The plot is very twisted and there is a lot to follow, but the film never strings you along and the assured direction helps make sure you can follow every plot thread and not get lost. Definite shout-out to the set and costume designers who breathe new life into the 1950s, every corner looking as convincing as ever.
The climactic shoot-out is one of the all-time tense firefights; choreographed to gritty perfection. It's a very morose film, and being a noir it's filled with plenty of murder and deceit, but it is an intelligent crime film and has never been topped as an ensemble police film!
