Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Adam S — 27 Jul 2014
"L.A. Confidential" is an utterly engrossing neo-noir thrill ride, combining classic noir elements with stylish violence, a terrific script, a brilliant cast and a breathtaking plot.
Set around 3 cops in the L.A.P.D. during the early 1950's, we follow a strict by-the-book detective, a tough-as-nails cynic and the classic "Hollywood" detective as they work through a web of corruption and deception as they attempt to discover the source of a spate of murders, following the incarceration of local crime boss Mickey Cohen. There are more twists and turns than on a rollercoaster, leading to some intriguing places.
The cast is top notch. The three cops are played by Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey, and they are backed by a strong supporting cast that includes Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, David Strathairn and Ron Rifkin. (For fans of "The Mentalist", it also features an early performance by Simon Baker).
It truly is a brilliant watch, and the stylish violence mixed with classic noir gives it a timeless feel. In fact, if I had to describe this film in one word, it would be Hollywood.
One of the greats.
