Review of La Belle Noiseuse (1991) by Martin T — 14 Jan 2010
Jacques Rivette's four-hour long LA BELLE NOISEUSE has been compared (rather rightfully so) to watching paint dry. Well, I guess I enjoy watching paint dry! Much of the film consists of long, stationary shots of the artist at work.
The film tells the story of an aging artist who hasn't worked for ten years. When young Marianne (the always beautiful Emmanuelle Beart) comes to model for him, though, the creative juices being flowing, and he sets upon completing his should-be masterpiece, "La belle noiseuse.
" The two-hour version, DIVERTIMENTO was comprised of alternate takes, and it feels more like a typical foreign flick. In fact, DIVERTIMENTO feels a lot longer than its more spaciously paced counterpart.
LA BELLE NOISEUSE is a rare, exceptional masterpiece of a motion picture.
