Review of La Bamba (1987) by Patrick B — 07 Jul 2010
Two things stand out in "La Bamba;" the music and Esai Morales's powerful performance as Ritchie Valen's older brother. The rest of the film is just alright. The script has its strong points, but the dialogue (especially towards the end) gets a little mushy.
I also didn't like all of the blatant foreshadowing about the plane crash. We get it. He's going to die in a plane crash, so stop hinting at it. Despite these flaws, "La Bamba" gives off an energy that's as powerful and familiar as Ritchie Valen's music, and that energy carries the film along nicely.
