Review of Kurt Cobain: About a Son (2007) by Richard S — 04 Mar 2008
This film is likely to alienate as many people as it enthralls. I'm past my Nirvana obsessed period, but Schnack's film was a pleasant surprise. It's culled from audio interviews that are played over a loosely structured series of images from the Puget Sound area. This lends an unexpected intimacy. Of course some bits sound prophetic, but it's difficult not to read into Kurt's statements. Some sequences work better than others. The childhood memories were often more interesting than the rest because they were new to me, but despite the lack of a narrative, I was consistantly interested.
It's best to be aware of the structure before considering a rental. If you're looking for concert footage and such you are going to be sorely disappointed.
