Review of Kurt Cobain: About a Son (2007) by Amber A — 23 Feb 2009
I would have been just as happy to have listened to these conversations on my ipod or on CD. I loved Nirvana, and the loss of Kurt Cobain was a musical tragedy ... but this documentary doesn't really bring anything to the table other than the interview.
The movie is just a seemingly random collection of originally shot video with Kurt Cobain talking over it. Like I said, the interview is interesting because it gives you a pretty raw look into the mind of Kurt Cobain .
.. none of which is all that shocking. I recently saw a documentary, "Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten" -- which filled in the visual gaps of the documentary with clips from movies, tv shows and other random things.
This movie doesn't include ANY footage of Cobain or the band, so the ENTIRE movie is random video clips. But unlike the Strummer movie, these video clips just seem thrown together. I'm sure there was a method to the madness, but it wasn't very obvious and therefore didn't really work.
I wouldn't really recommend this unless you're a really big fan and your interest in the interview will trump the pointlessness of the video.
