Review of Kung Fury (2015) by Ryan V — 28 Jan 2016
A terse supercop (writer/director David Sandberg) fights a horde of Nazis, robots, and other nasties on a time-traveling quest to kill Hitler. Kung Fury is consciously trying to evoke the sleazy 80's genre trash that found cult audiences on video; a karate fight between Kung Fury and a sentient arcade console is interrupted by editing distortions designed to evince a VCR tracking error.
This film's gleeful appropriations of Troma, John Woo, period comic books, low budget barbarian movies, and fighting games is the very definition of over-the-top, but it's hard not to get caught up in the filmmaker's enthusiasm.
As a whole, Kung Fury is a cheeky romp that winds up being pretty fun to watch.
