Review of Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016) by Darian T — 03 Oct 2016
IMO, Kung Fu Panda 3 has a pretty humdrum plot that's elevated only by the incredibly detailed animation and enthusiastic voice-acting. At best, it's pretty but bland; at worst, it's lazy and unimaginative.
==============.
Script/Direction: B.
The story is simple as can be and follows the formula of the previous films: some big bad guy shows up and of course Po must play the unlikely hero again. There are a few laughs to be had, but it's not uproarious or anything.
Cast/Voice-Acting: A.
You can tell the cast had fun but sometimes it feels like Jack Black is having ALL the fun, at the expense of everyone else (even the audience.).
Production/Animation: A.
The quality of the animation is competent--in fact, very good--but it is still lacking any WOW-inducing moments. I think they could have done more with the "secret panda village" and "spirit realm" and the kungfu techniques; as it stands, these areas of the film felt a little underwhelming to me.
Bonus/Other: +0.
Honestly, there is no real reason for this three-quel to exist other than as a way to make more money from people who want more of the same.
