Review of Kung Fu Panda (2008) by Greg C — 20 Nov 2012
Actually surprised about this, this was a good entertaining film, although I am getting quite sick of talking animal movies but was a good fish out of water movie with a few refreshing moments. Everything that happens in this dull tale of Po, a paunchy panda who becomes a zealous kung fu fighter, is telegraphed well in advance.
A master [course] in cunning visual art and ultra-satisfying entertainment, though that's not surprising as Dreamworks HAVE produced some amazing visuals in their films but it's also the visuals that carry the film and never the story.
Luckily, this okish gem has a simple plot to keep you interested. One thing that's also noted is the great voice cast and Jack Black may have found his franchise (I only say this, because they've done a sequel).
The voices are perfect for their characters but sometimes it seems they don't get enough time to bring the energy out. This is a funny film, with lot's of witty in-jokes from old Kung-fu films that only adults will know, has stuff for kids but I'd say the film is a little grown up.
The action scenes were great though. I'd say that How to Train your Dragon is a lot better than this though.
