Review of Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) by Jesus C — 25 Mar 2013

The first movie is great, and honestly I thought it was a good enough masterpiece by the Dreamworks team. When I heard that a sequel was coming out, I wasn't too excited. I was worried it would take the masterpiece of the original and just try to do it again and in doing such make it lesser, like most Disney cheapquels.

However, just like my expectations of the first film, I WAS SO DAMN WRONG. This movie was just as good, if not a bit better, than the first, making the story more important, the villain MUCH more satisfying than Tai Lung as well as having the perfect voice for the job, the characters are more developed, the jokes are the same but I still get quite the laughs out of them, it can get pretty dark at times, Po's backstory is revealed as well as an explanation as to why his dad's a bird, AND it's just as emotional and powerful as the first film.

The fight scenes are jumped up god knows how many levels, Po seems to have a better relationship with the Furious Five, extremely suspenseful moments, and if you're not a very often dry-eyed person you might get a few tears off of some scenes, like when everyone believes Po is dead, and let me tell you, it sure looks like it.

Overall, I hear a third movie is in development, not sure if it will be as good as these last two, but since the ending of Kung Fu Panda 2 shows signs of a sequel, I hope for it sooner or later. The only thing that worries me is how it will related to the show based off these two films, which I've only seen about one or two episodes of and was incredibly bored by it and felt it had an extreme disrespect for the more serious parts of the movies.

Oh well, if they can make a Madagascar 3 which seems to have been a hit after making a spin-off show about the penguins, they sure can make a third movie, and I will be looking forward to it!
