Review of Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Johan B — 23 Aug 2010
Sometimes it is hard to love CGI. For me, CGI is the popcorn; a sweetener for bad movie, a sugar in bitter coffee, a pretty girl in nightmare, etc. It is rare, for me, to see something unoriginal yet refreshing and surprisingly, satisfying.
It is not in these days I've found a movie like Kung Fu Hustle, with all of its comical actions, arranged with over-dramatic combat, never too hustle to be humorous while keeping its foot in the Wu Xia genre.
It is hard to find such fabulous movie, with its extraordinary camerawork that maybe only few commercial directors know how to present it on screen (and nothing to consider about the acting; I'm not surprised).
Kung Fu Hustle is a kind of movie you want to bring home and to watch with your friends and family. Kung Fu Hustle is a kind of movie that might not know better at the kung fu itself (the choreograph isn't too much different than what I recognized in other Wu Xia films), but it might show you some good practical jokes.
Why? Because as I said earlier, the film doesn't rely on the CGI only, but also on the craftsmanship depicted in nearly each scenes.
