Review of Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Michele S — 10 Oct 2010
I saw this twice in the theaters and of course bought it when it came straight to DVD. This has to be one of the most original movies I?ve seen. Two thumbs up to Steven Chow for co-writing and directing this movie. He also brilliantly played, Sing, the main character who is trying desperately to get into the infamous Axe Gang. The beginning of the movie gives you a taste of how ruthless the Axe Gang truly is and then it leads into Sing?s character. Sing and his sidekick stroll into a town playing the role of tough gangsters, with the intention of getting a haircut and robbing the barber. However, this town is inhabited by several Kung Fu Masters with unique abilities that allow them to overpower just about anyone that crosses their path. Sing?s experience with these Kung Fu Masters takes him into a new direction. Not only does Sing reconsider his goal of being a member of the brutally violent Axe Gang but he also discovers a long lost love.
Chow does an outstanding job creating a film that incorporates gangsters, fight scenes, dance numbers, comedy, and even love. It is not your typical Kung Fu movie...it definitely stands in its own category. Don?t miss this original masterpiece!
