Review of Kundun (1997) by Elyn L — 14 Dec 2010
Beautiful shots and many flawless transitions between scenes demonstrate Scorsese's expertise as a visual film-maker. But they cannot conceal some flaws in the film. The standing point of viewing the easten religion as something exostic is still present in here, through the repetitive scenes of sand paintings, and the scene of celestial burial.
And it is still a partial interpretation of the history. The uniforms of Liberation Army seems anachronistic, and the portrait of Chairman Mao is just ridiculous. It is intended to portray Kundun and Tibetans as human while demonizing Chinese because they are atheists and communists.
Kundun's version of history is still just his story and cannot be rid of subjectivity.
