Review of Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014) by L G — 05 May 2015
A tonal hybrid between anime pacing and Coen Brother's dark humor, KUMIKO: THE TREASURE HUNTER is as a unique a film as I've seen in recent years while still feeling familiar and approachable. The brilliant Rinko Kikuchi creates such a quiet and nuanced performance that she is simultaneously sympathetic and wholly unlikable.
The films biggest hurdle is one that the Zellner's don't entirely clear, with an ending that feels inevitable and not nearly as ambiguous as they seem to think. Regardless, they may have tripped over the hurdle, but they landed with grace; balanced by beautiful cinematography, a winning script, and believable performances across the board.
