Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Ming Siu G — 07 Sep 2016
I love folklore and animation, especially stop-motion, but this movie dragged on. The characters were, plainly put, lacking of character and I didn't care one bit if they succeeded in their mission. The animation and design was fantastic but the story simultaneously tried too hard while not trying hard enough. It tried to be light and dark, funny and serious but in an uneven way.
Honestly, I cannot see why it's so well-received. If I had to guess, it's because the movie feels artsy. That said, I would have rather seen "Boxtrolls" a second time than to have seen Kubo.
It's one of those movies that people will most likely try to watch a second time only to say, "This is not that good. Why did we like it?".
