Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Greg B — 07 Sep 2016
"Kubo and the Two Strings" is a Laika Productions coming-of-age story about a young boy named Kubo who fights mystical forces bent on destroying him and his mother. Kubo has an unexplainable ability to make origami sculptures come to life by playing a stringed instrument.
This film admittedly has a good story, script, brilliant animation and cinematography. However, I found the premise extremely bizarre and after the first 20 minutes the story gets exceptionally dark and twisted.
It's hard to believe this could have been marketed as a children's film because it is excessively violent and dark. I also thought the coming of age element was a bit underplayed and that there are several plot holes in this story.
This film wasn't all bad. The characters are enjoyable to watch and the animation is brilliant. I just think this film failed to take the next step --------------------------------------------------- B.
