Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Colin C — 05 Oct 2016

A stunningly beautiful movie. Kubo and the Two Strings may look like it is marketed to a younger audience but both adults and children will appreciate it.

Of note however is how unapologetically sinister and vivid it becomes at times. It is not often that movies of this nature deal with themes such as loss, death (and life thereafter) hope, and faith in the human condition to endure.

The movie is extremely well made, sometimes it seems vague with backstory but that may be intentional, younger people tend to have more active imaginations, and as this story comes from a young boys' point of view this is understandable, maybe things aren't clear because the world is a strange place to a child.

I particularly liked the characters of Beetle and Monkey, but all the characters are well done, the main protagonist is incredibly heroic and is wise beyond his years, a sad truth when children are subjected to the harsh reality of life.

The Animation is absolutely incredible, the voice acting is top notch and the music score is fantastic. it truly is a treat for the senses.

I highly recommend it.
