Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Brandon A — 28 Apr 2017
This is an absolutely brilliant film. It's dark, far darker than a movie supposedly targeted at kids generally is, but not unnecessarily so; the film opens a discussion about family, trust, loss, and struggle that somehow is complex enough for adults and simple enough for kids to enjoy.
Visually, the stop-motion is astounding. I could go on, but you really have to see it for yourself. The score is fantastic, the voice-work is good, and the story blends Japanese folklore with universal concerns. There are themes in here that resonate, moments that sing, and there's never a wasted or dull second. See this movie.
