Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Gabriel C — 08 May 2017
Kubo and the Two Strings is one the best animated movies I have seen in a long time. The casting is impressive and the animation is amazing. Most modern animated films try to be hip and relevant with the kids or make heavy-handed attempts at addressing sociopolitical issues.
Kubo and the Two Strings does neither and instead tries to tell a good story in the way a good movie should. Laika is a brilliant studio that has released movies like Coraline, Paranorman and The Boxtrolls, all very good movies.
It is also a sadly underappreciated animation company that often gets trampled by the likes of Disney and those horrible straight to DVD animated kids movies released by Lionsgate. I hope that one day, Laika will get the recognition it deserves.
Unlike most of these movie companies, Laika doesn't care about money and it actually wants to tell inventive, clever and wonderful stories for audiences alike. I think Kubo and the Two Strings is a rare movie of its kind.
It doesn't insult the intelligence of children and doesn't alienate parents, and in many ways it is more adult than most people will give it credit for. It may be forgotten after a few years, but it will still have its fans.
