Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Jeremiah F — 16 Feb 2018
One of the best movies of all time. Stellar animation, voice acting, story, and direction are seen throughout the film. Simply put, it is excellence. Pure excellence that is rarely seen nowadays. Sariatu(Kubo's mother) is a compelling character willing to sacrifice herself to save the only thing she has left, her son.
Kubo, on the other hand, is a naive boy unwilling to listen to his mother in order to bond, or at least know, a father that has long since passed, and he is so well written that you feel for him when that does not happen, initially.
The monkey and the beetle make for a hilarious, chemistry-filled duo that protect Kubo and give him the parents he so much desired to have. Kubo thinks he has everything he could ever want, and that makes it all the more painful when it is so quickly ripped away from him, in order to do the greater good.
It all ends in a spectacular show of human kindness and heartfelt emotional beauty.
