Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Tony1984 — 22 Jan 2018
An Americanised vision of a Japanese folk tale was something I had never encountered before. A novel experience. The tale of a Japanese boy and his magical shamisen who stayed out after dark (tut tut) using the medium of stop motion animation justifies high praise.
The voice acting and exposition early on are tone perfect. Beautiful , captivating and funny in equal measure thanks to Monkey and Beetle. But be warned, it is also a bit scary, for young ones and old ones.
The two sisters are especially sinister with their emotionless masks and floating dread. However for all the positives the story meanders towards the end and the boss fight is they say in video games weak.
The conclusion was lost on me I'm afraid. Maybe it’s cultural differences? but I would have preferred a different last ten minutes.
