Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Lewis E — 17 Dec 2016
A decent animation which came out of nowhere. The imaginative magical displays and combat are quite impressive while the unique textured design compliments the story's darker tones. It also unexpectedly proves funny in places, especially Beetle (voiced by Matthew McConaughy) as the loyal yet empty-headed sidekick, not too dissimilar to Kronk in 'Emperor's New Groove'.
Unfortunately these strengths were diluted by a storyline which plays on the heart strings a little too often and excessively manipulates its fantasy world to achieve desired emotional effect. As result, it sometimes came across cheesy.
Probably worth catching over the lazy Christmas period as there is definitely cool stuff here but these needed to be fleshed out in order to add weight to the film's climax and make it an animation to remember.
