Review of Krull (1983) by James G — 16 Aug 2007
An epic fantasy from the peak of the fantasy genre revival in the early 1980s. Budgets and effects may have moved on, but Krull's sense of scale still impresses, and I find myself more amazed by modelwork, prosthetics and practical effects than CGI because it's a tangible craft compared to 0s and 1s.
It's a product of a bygone age in that it is also one of the last times one could go to the cinema and see a big budget film almost entirely starring and crewed by British talent! Seemingly everyone is in Krull! Ken Marshall is incredibly butch as leather daddy hero, Lysette Anthony is so impossibly beautiful you don't care that her dialogue's obviously dubbed by another actor, and it has some moments which are truly scary for a juvenile audience.
