Review of Krull (1983) by Thomas P — 07 Apr 2008
Mostly unknown by film buffs and general viewers alike, this is a childhood favorite that still holds up today. The mixing of swords and sorcery with space battles sounds weird but somehow works. There is no way this would be made today because it is too fantastical and original.
It would also be far too scary for children (for whom I presume it was aimed at). Nevertheless the actors all perform with the unknown leads not looking the part but delivering... the starry support give the film the class it needs.
The Beast and The Slayers make terrifying nemeses, with the conning wise old man worse than The Exorcist... but the real star is James Horner, giving one of cinema's most sweeping scores.
