Review of Kronk's New Groove (2005) by Lizzie Y — 22 Nov 2006
Kronk?s New Groove isn?t bad nor is it great. It?s floating somewhere in luke-warm zone, it is one of Disney?s better direct-to-video releases.
The story is ok, a little slow in places, but still enjoyable. There were several movies spoofed in it, such as Lord of the Rings, and there were some pretty funny scenes. My favorite was when Kronk described Ms. Birdwell. Most of the characters from the original were in it, even if they had very minor roles. Kuzco was the only character that didn?t seem to fit in the film very well. Like the first film he stops the movie and says stuff in between, but in this one he comes off more annoying than funny. It?s almost like the writers didn?t know what to do with him. The new characters were ok, and amazingly I didn?t find any of them annoying. Kronk?s ?girl of his dreams? was great. The original voice cast returned which made me happy. So it get?s points for that.
The animation was ok, better than most dtv?s but not theater quality. The score is pretty good, there?s even a homage to the Lion King slipped in there which I found most amusing. There are a few songs, most of which I didn?t care for all that much as they were just plain bad or didn?t seem to fit in.
Overall I think this film is worth a rent, but I don?t think I?d buy it. It?s definitely not as good as the original, but then again sequals rarely are.
