Review of Krampus (2015) by Nicki M — 23 Dec 2017
In 1843 Charles Dickens wrote a ghost story to wake people up to the true Spirit of Christmas. It was a time of great economic disparity, poverty & greed, and "A Christmas Carol" was meant to tug at the hearts & souls of those that had forgotten the meaning of the season & the faith they proclaimed. Today, it is a quant Christmas tradition.
In 1946, "It's A Wonderful Life" was released to poor reviews & empty movie houses. It wasn't until 1974 that the copyright lapsed and people actually saw this quasi Twilight Zone episode on TV about a guy who wants to commit suicide at Christmas & discovers the meaning of Christmas, as well as his own life. Today, it is a quaint Christmas tradition.
In 2015 a Christmas horror movie called "Krampus" was released to poor reviews & went to premium cable. It is perhaps the BEST current Christmas movie available because it captures our current zeitgeist in the way that these two previous films hoped to do - however, it isn't quaint at all. Not yet at least. Maybe in a century it wil be just another cute Christmas tale, with the meaning buried in the nostalgic tale of early 21st century apathy, and the horror will become as non-frightening as Dicken's ghost of Christmas future.
Krampus is a metaphor for . . . "what happens when hope is lost, when belief is forgotten, and the Christmas Spirit dies.".
