Review of Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) by Sarah D — 06 Aug 2010
When you see the film that beat Apocalypse Now for Best Picture, you tend to be a little biased. Its not terrible, I do think Dustin Hoffman is very good, but I think the film is quite manipulative in how it deals with divorce and a child cusdoty battle.
The film is unjustly praised for representing both the mother and father views well. While it does show that father's are capable single parents, it also is strongly anti-feminist. The film seems to imply that radical feminism is what drives the American family apart.
Streep's character is shown to be a woman with strong feminist ideas which encourage her to leave her family. The consequences of that are shown in such a way that the whole movie seems to be an argument for complete patriarchy.
The woman is emotionally unstable and the man has to pull it all together. My biggest complaint rests on the ending which throws any realism about the breakup of a family out the window.
