Review of Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) by Mike L — 05 Sep 2009
A movie that asked a question, that was ahead of its time, never gave us an answer, and society still does not have the correct answer due to obsolete and preconceived perceptions.
The gist of the story is a married couple with a son, the wife decides she cant take it anymore and decides to leave. Where the movie works is showing how a father and son, who did not necessarily know each other well at the start of this situation, grew and bonded over time into a loving single family. Where the story and society break down is when the wife shows up 2 years later wanting custody of the son. Where this fails is that the courts actually hear this case, just because she is the mother. This does not mean she is a fit parent, which she has already proven, but the stupid courts are to obsolete and set in their ways to recognize this.
The acting of Hoffman and Streep are very good, especially Hoffman as he basically carries the movie. Dramatically the movie got the ending right, but unfortunately life cannot give us the same Hollywood ending.
The movie would work better if society would learn and correct from its mistakes, but it does not.
