Review of Kontroll (2003) by Michael C — 11 Apr 2010
Kontroll is a haunting dark comedy-thriller set on the Budapest Metro. Bulcsu is the leader of a team of ne'er-do-well ticket takers that struggle with the day to day challenges of the vast Underground - dealing with characters that refuse to comply, chasing scoff laws and brawling with football fans. Bulcsu sleeps in the Metro, curling up on the floor as the lights flicker out up and down the tunnels, and waking to the roar of the first trains in the morning.
As passengers begin to die in the subway, pushed in front of speeding trains by a hooded stranger - Bulcsu comes under suspicion for the crimes.
I loved the way it was shot - It has a music video feel to it at times (the film was allegedly inspired by a music video) and the Budapest Metro system provides a endless supply of locations, unique lighting and characters - And what characters - the movie is filled with unique faces. It even has a little love story - and redemption for our hero? Mystery, dream sequences, action, fun and funny - Kontroll became one of my favorite movies the first time I saw it.
