Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Late R — 31 Mar 2018
When it's good, it's good, with some thrilling scenes (and a few particularly cool shots) that are beautifully filmed using a strong, vibrant colour palette and lots of heart-pumping action involving a bevy of weird and wonderful creatures, a point in the plot that I'm glad someone thought of - if there was an undiscovered island somewhere that had a giant gorilla, there's bound to be other creatures, too.
It doesn't waste much time getting into the action and that's where it shines, but it also knows it can't stay there the whole time. Unfortunately, that's where the problems start: the pacing is off and the tonal shifts are strange and abrupt, not to mention a lot of the characters - most of which are pretty one-dimensional and flat -- feeling like they were miscast.
So basically, you wanna see some cool action that's nicely shot within a well-designed world? It's got a good deal of that. But if you're looking for anything else - like, say, some heart and soul -- you won't find it here.
