Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Quinton S — 15 Jul 2017
This was a joy to watch. It does away with the slow build-up till the revealing of the monster, instead it's suddenly just *there*, something which I can appreciate after Jackson's King Kong.
And yes, I couldn't help but compare it to Kong's previous cinematic appearance and note how much more I enjoyed this. While there's some tie-in to the Godzilla movie, it doesn't impact the story at all and is just something for the audience to enjoy.
The cast is a no-brainer - Jackson's aggresive demeanor versus a massive ape is like a dream come true. The rest of the cast fits in very well and I couldn't find the usual annoying trope that turns me away. Heck, even "the girl" made me appreciate the role in a new way.
Visuals are fine. It's a jungle, what more do we need? Some nice expansive shots. Sounds grrrrrrrrreat. Creatures are fine, tho I can't help but wonder how the skullmonsters are even a thing. Oh well, no point discussing logic in a movie with a gigantic lifeform on a small island.
Watch it.
