Review of Kon-Tiki (2012) by Erno K — 20 Nov 2013
What a beautiful film. I have no idea who the filmmakers are, but I want this exact combination of director, editor, cinematographer and composer to make all the big Hollywood movies from now on. There is something simply magical about the way this film is shot. I loved every second of it.
I especially love how some parts are almost like a nature documentary, where we get to marvel all the wondrous things found at sea. I don't doubt for a second that there wasn't significant embellishments made to the happenings of the real expedition, but I don't mind that when it's done this well. The whale shark bit was a bit too much though. But I understand that we can't just be shown five dudes laying on a raft for two hours. Although, with the right director, I would watch even that.
If Thor (not the thunder god) really didn't know how to swim, he was one crazy motherfucker to go on this trip. That would take some serious balls. I'm only going to cross the Pacific on a dinky raft, who needs swimming, right? After the scene where one of the guys describes how it really feels how to drown I might not go near water for a few years myself.
This (Norwegian film) is easily better than 80 per cent of the stuff Hollywood produces, and even the budget looks to have been enormous, although I imagine it really wasn't. The film just looks that amazing. Completely deserved the Oscar nomination for best foreign film.
One of the highlights of the year for me.
