Review of Kolya (1996) by Nathaniel C — 21 Jan 2008
Its a nice film with a clear message of love but nothing new. Its odd how in the '80's there were tons of these easy going light-hearted dramas, but given that the money fell out of dramas in the '90's we had to go to the Czech Republic with the format.
The format I mean is a very standard plot develpoment with stock-characters along with directions and shot choices that feel like a TV-movie more than a film. This movie does stand-out due to the performce of Zdenek Sverak and the boy who try and often win at playing their roles above the archa-type, along with the fact that this type of film feels like its been years since you've seen one.
So worth watching but I would say if you want to see a Czech filim better go with "Closely Watched Trains" or if you want this movie without the sub-titles "About a Boy".
