Review of Knocked Up (2007) by John H — 14 Sep 2012
What makes KNOCKED UP rise above the rest of the Frat Pack are its intelligent observations of its characters, recognizing both their mannerisms and the fears they're built to hide. This makes a potentially sitcom-esque premise as believable as possible, due to some truly excellent character development.
Rogen and Heigl have a sweet chemistry and give likable performances, and the supporting players (most of whom would become big names in their own right) are all well cast. If there's a problem, it's that the movie is too long: the version I saw was the extended 133 minute cut, and there was way too much filler in it for it to completely be gone from the theatrical 128 minute version.
That being said, it's a charming and surprisingly affecting gross-out rom-com from Apatow, who with this and 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN proves that he's the real thing. Oh, and the gross-out gags are hysterical.
