Review of Knockaround Guys (2001) by Bradley H — 24 Jul 2011
Knockaround Guys brought together an interesting group of performers that had some hit-and-miss chemistry. The script was fairly plain, mob collection goes terribly wrong and the pawns hastily mop up before the big fish get pissed off.
It was kind of cool how the film brought a contrast between the mafia and small midwestern towns, especially nearing the end. As I was watching this movie I thought to myself that I never thought that I'd see Seth Green and Vin Diesel on the same screen, but thinking back, the two never even interacted! That was a major flaw in the movie, the four "knockaround guys" did not interact with each other adequately, resulting in weak character relations.
Matty's relations with the characters was emphasized just fine, but the remainder of the cast was loosely-woven. After the crew found out that the sheriff had the money, the rest of the movie unravelled rather predictably.
The bulletfest at the end was inevitable, and very sloppy as an ending. Overall a moderately entertaining picture that relied on starpower for it's value, a mistake that is too often made in Hollywood today.
