Review of Knock Knock (2015) by Matt B — 11 Oct 2015
Eli Roth is renowned for maximizing the violence/gore in his horror movies. Mostly I get frustrated with it, but in his newest thriller, Knock Knock, I actually WANTED him to go berserk with horror. He never does. He has made a cleverly premised movie that left me deeply deeply DEEPLY unsatisfied.
Its plot is very similar to David Slade's masterful thriller, Hard Candy (starring a then-unknown Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson). Two sexy, psychotic women try to catch a predator (in this case, it's a happily married man, played by Keanu Reeves) by seducing and then torturing him. Right away I love this story. It has the potential to be a fun, over-the-top revenge thriller with some nice social commentary. Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas are fantastic as the maniacal villains.
Instead (SPOILER ALERT!!!), it ends abruptly. There's no revenge. There's no horror. There's just nothing. Even worse, Roth awkwardly turns Knock Knock into an awkwardly campy horror flick (with a couple painfully-delivered lines by Reeves). Roth, why were you too safe here?!?!! Give us gore! Give us horror!
