Review of Knight of Cups (2015) by Christopher C — 08 Mar 2016
Taken as a silent film meant to be "experienced" rather than a story intended to be followed, I found Malick's latest to be completely mesmerizing. Comparisons to his previous films notwithstanding, the more apt parallel has to be to Godfrey Reggio's Qatsi Trilogy, specifically the artful collaboration of visual and aural sensations in Koyaanisqatsi.
The sounds and images rush over you like a warm bath, sparse dialogue and meandering voiceover used to enhance the soundscape more than propel the narrative. Never before have I seen L.A. shot with such vapid exuberance.
Taking cues from La Dolce Vita and The Great Beauty, Malick's disdain for the glamorous emptiness of Hollywood is a parable to the grotesque.
