"Pretentiousness" requires that the person in question doesn't know what they're talking about. Malick-who studied philosophy at Harvard and Oxford, has published a translation of Heidegger, taught philosophy at MIT, and lived a full and varied life, 20 years of which was spent outside of the film industry- knows what he's talking about.
