Oh, Terrence Malick. It's not that Malick's insistence on not having a plot is the problem, but that he is determined to give the audience absolutely no structure of anything to navigate themselves through the images he presents on screen.
For example, who is Rick? What does he do? the only reason why I knew he was a hollywood writer was because I read that before I watched the movie. It was never mentioned in the film. This style of film making was done much more artfully and completely in "The Tree of Life.
