Review of Knight and Day (2010) by James W — 02 Apr 2014
The cool and mysterious Roy Miller played by Tom Cruise is joined by the beautiful and distressed June Havens played by Cameron Diaz on a globetrotting mission filled with insane action and big laughs in Knight & Day, one of my favourite action comedies.
You've heard it before, action guy sweeps clueless girl on a dangerous adventure, as the journey continues the girl becomes skilled, yet despite the familiarity Knight & Day breathes new life into this formula, and Director James Mangold mixes laughter in with high speed chases and it works so well, best of all sees Cruise crash land onto Diaz' car bonnet and casually comments on how beautiful her dress looks, all the while armed men open fire at him, I love the absurdity.
Cruise is suave and witty and comes across like an American version of James Bond in the Pierce Brosnan days, Cameron Diaz is hilarious and suitably terrified yet develops eventually becoming a gun slinging badass, plus Peter Sarsgaard is great as a quietly dark bad guy who never ventures into campy territory.
The supporting cast is solid, even though their parts are relatively small they add important backstory. With a barrage of awesome action sequences that never stop, Knight & Dat is a near perfect action comedy and it's made all the more fun by two of the best and coolest stars, Cruise and Diaz.
