Review of Knife in the Water (1962) by Grant G — 16 Apr 2009
Three people on a boat? Can that make for a great movie? Yes it can. Polanski's use of tight shots, high contrast black and white and the slow build-up of tension and bravardo between the two men makes for a great movie.
The arc of the woman's appearance is also something that creeps up on you. She starts off moderately attractive and becomes very sexy before going back to how she looked at the start. In my experience, that's exactly what happens when you spend time with some people in close proximity.
I also suspect this movie was a major influence on Dead Calm, although a vastly superior movie to that piece of trite (well, anything with Billy Zane is dubious as far as I'm concerned).
