Review of Klute (1971) by Greg D — 19 Nov 2009
A great performance by Fonda is undercut by a script that commits the cardinal sin of screenwriting: never have the character tell us her motivation. The film does just that by inserting Fonda in therapy sessions in which she explains her underpinning drives in great detail, followed by a scene in which she acts on that drive.
It's a huge and maddening misstep in an otherwise cool little character study/detective thriller. Pakula should have known better.
