Review of Klute (1971) by Leighton T — 05 Sep 2009
A very very good film which evokes the noir detective stories of the 40's and 50's. The film is better in its character study side than it is in being a thriller (a couple of fight scenes look silly and stupid even with fast editing).
Jane Fonda controls the film and gives an authentic, fierce performance. She shows vulnerability, yet you can see and feel control each time she turns a trick. Every single moment you believe in Fonda as Daniels, something that Fonda I feel usually forces in her acting.
She gives us a great look at the psyche of a call girl. Sutherland is great as well, although his character really feels conditional to Fonda's. The cinematography is spectacular and is the only reason the thriller aspect of the film works at all.
The last scene, where we watch Bree Daniels listen to a tape of the killing of one of her former fellow call girls is easily the most effective moment of the film.
