Review of Klute (1971) by Gareth M — 09 Nov 2009
While not incredibly satisfying as a thriller, it showcases a great performance from Jane Fonda as a smart and conflicted call girl. Donald Sutherland plays Klute, a small town cop turned private detective looking for a missing friend who might be stalking Bree (Jane Fonda). While Bree is more charismatic, outgoing, beautiful and fashionable, Klute is more moral and dedicated while learning of the despair and corrupt life of New York city. Yet the both start to grow closer to one another as they search for this missing man...
Like I said, Jane Fonda as Bree is great and has some wonderful lines, and New York City is photographed in such a way that you can see some of the wonderful microcosms that exist in that big strange place. The film also aims to depict that it isn't just the rat race of the city that corrupts people, but the human hearts ability to allow itself into corruption.
1971 was a great year for film in general so check this one out.
