Review of Kites (2010) by Ajayesh S — 23 May 2010
Though this is a movie which I shouldn't have enjoyed for innumerable reasons (lack of good music, the one supposed good song sucks, there is no great storyline to talk of and it has a bad ending by Indian standards - we do like "happy endings";)) I ended up loving this movie.
Anurag Kashyap has attempted to make the perfect Hollly-Bolly movie and he has probably succeeded in doing so. It's not a great movie by either Hollywood/Bollywood standards but it just works. Barbara Mori is stunning and Hrithik as usual rocks in a highly emotive performance.
Though most Indians will hate the flick (b'coz of the ending) I freakin' loved it. Maybe because I'm a die-hard romantic, this storyline appealed to me no end. The action scenes are truly awesome by Indian standards and the characters are well-etched (except Kangana - surprising since this is Anurag's flick, and Kabir Bedi who are caricatures).
The rest of the cast is outstanding and it is technically brilliant. Highly recommended, but don't expect the average Indian flick, this is a flick which is trying to mix the best of both - Hollywood style with Indian sensibilities and that it does with elan.
