Review of Kites (2010) by Marisa R — 19 Jul 2011
Interesting! As a Mexican national who watches Bollywood this was different in some ways, and very predictable in others. I quite enjoyed the visuals, never saw Vegas so beautiful before, and for the first time without strippers.
The portray of Mexican culture is quite interesting too, even though the forest cabin location was very off, as well as getting married with the 'Charro' suit is not accurate (boda charra jajaja) it was still a good attempt.
The story is thought-provoking: an rich Indian family in Las Vegas with as much power as the president, and an army of 'duros', implying a corrupted system dominated by desis who speak Spanish (and pretty good!).
I wonder if the current violent situation in Mexico influenced such approach, it felt like watching a 'narco novela' from Latin America. The acting was good, and I was surprised to see how comfortable were Indian film makers with kisses and nakedness in comparison to other mainstream Bollywood films.
The action was terrible, predictable and flashy, very similar to 'El Mariachi' with Banderas and Hayek. Nonetheless I enjoyed the journey and laughed at 'me estoy haciendo caca' with joy.
Not the best Indian film, but a good time pass and fresh approach to the story. I hope to see more cross cultural films in the future, and btw Barbara Mori is not Mexican, she is Uruguayan :).
