Review of Kitchen Stories (2003) by Jay B — 04 Sep 2008
Fantastic deadpan comedy with a strong warm humanist streak. Set in the 50s, Swedish "kitchen science" researchers observe the kitchen habits of Norwegian single men in order to make kitchen layouts more efficient.
This gloriously absurd premise creates some wonderful moments of dry humour as the rearchers subject, a cantankerous old man, makes it as hard as possible for the observer, even turning the tables and spying on him.
The informal, scientific methods gradually turn to close friendship between the pair. One of those lovely, feel-good films you're glad to have discovered.
