Review of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008) by Mark W — 21 Jul 2008
I bet you didn't expect to see a review of this film in my list, but when you are a Grandad you get to see lots of movies you might not normally see.
But without reservation, I liked this movie. I especially liked the social statements about poverty: how easy it is to marginalize poor people, how easy it is to slide into poverty, and how easy it is to assume that to be poor is to be criminal.
This film was able to handle some serious social issues without either slipping into the banal or self-righteous, perhaps because of the excellent acting of Abigail Breslin and Julia Ormond, as well as the comic relief (with a conscience) of Joan Cusack.
This is not a date movie, but one that older children and young teens will learn from and their parents and grandparents will enjoy.
