Review of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008) by David Z — 13 Sep 2009
When a movie stars Abigail Breslin, Jane Krakowski, Stanley Tucci, Chris O'Donnell, Joan Cusack and it's produced by Julia Roberts and still nobody knows it exists, something's wrong...Luckily, it's not the film that's to blame here, it's the marketing.
The movie takes a while to get going but it's bound to please its target audience. In spite of a seriously flawed use of music (the score's sappy and I detest wall-to-wall music) and some meh opening scenes, the movie's sweet spirit manages to shine through.
Look for Zach Mills, especially, as the best friend of the title character. The kids so talented and adorable it's not even fair. The movie's probably instantly forgettable, but its got some nice discussion openers about dealing with the poor and the difficulties families face when money starts to run dry.
Joan Cusack and Max Theiriot also give some great performances.
