Review of Kissing Jessica Stein (2002) by Mark J — 07 Jun 2007
Still the best romantic comedy I've ever seen-- perhaps because it's not about love as the end-all-be-all but rather as a starting-off point for deeper questions about self-identity and personal fulfillment.
To film buffs who think Woody Allen is the highest authority on Jewish neurotic romantic comedy, I say, see this film, note its big heart, laugh-a-minute comedic pacing, and insightful examination of sexual identity, and I think you'll see that Woody could never come up with something this complex and good.
As a previous viewer mentioned, the scene between Jessica and her mother (played by Tovah Feldshuh) on the porch is one of the most powerful and touching scenes in recent memory- actually worthy of its sentimental value.
